So, 63 years ago, opened a story in Electronics Weekly’s edition of March 29, 1961
The story continued;
The difference is that the system was planned by Multisignals Ltd. simultaneously and in full cooperation with the town development authorities.
It is integrated into the town, and initially will serve over 1,000 homes in Cwmbran.
Viewers will be able to receive first-class TV and sound radio programmes, though normal direct reception in the area is affected by the surrounding hills.
Although several other * poor reception ” areas are already receiving piped television, Cwmbran is the first new town to have the Multisignals system.
Apart from technical advantages, the technique is favoured for new towns because it keeps rooftops clear of individual aerial arrays and preserves the general appearance aimed at by the town planners.
Multisignals was formed in July 1959 and is backed by Thorn, E.K. Cole, Ultra, Anglia TV and Granada Group.
Them were the days.
Around here it was Red Dragon Relays which was started by a pharmacist in the late 1930s to distribute radio and then morphed into TV in the 1950s.
Long gone now, though you can still see bits of the coaxial cable stuck to people’s houses even now.
My Dad worked for them for years until it was taken over by Maple McCowards, then by Radio Rentals who promptly made him redundant.
