Post Office To Start Satcomms Tests

PLANS for the start next year of experimental tests of satellite communications in which the GPO will take part were announced in a White Paper published last week by Mr. J. R. Bevins, Postmaster-General.

So, 63 years ago, started a story in uppercase Electronics Weekly’sc edition of April 5, 1961

The satellites are to be launched in America by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and a ground station is to be provided in this country by the Post Office.


Orders are being placed in the next few months for equipment required for the station.


Research on the design of special transmitters, receivers, and large steerable aerials are well advanced.

Also mentioned in the White Paper, on Post Office Prospects for the coming year, is that tests are to start by autumn on the first electronic telephone exchange at Highgate Wood.
