The problem was getting potential customers to buy into the possibilities these breakthroughs offered.
He did two things:
For one technology breakthrough he worked with a radio company to produce a first-of-a-kind radio one of which was bought by the CEO of IBM who was so impressed with it that he encouraged his engineers to use the technology in building computers.
For another technology breakthrough he had a portable calculator made which sold in large quantities creating a very wide understanding of the benefits of the technology.
Moral: Technology Needs To Be Sold
The bit about the calculator had me puzzled as TI never put their Cal-Tech on the market. However, it turns out that they were sold commercially by Canon as the Pocketronic. The idea of having to keep loading paper into your pocket calculator to see any results sounds slightly inconvenient and was soon superceded by LEDs or VFDs
